I was out for fish porn while I'm currently trying to rid myself of the god damn bubonic plague that my inlaws brought down upon my household. Now, after watching this I was able to relate alot. I work(ed) a high stress job to support my family and put a roof over their heads and ended up blowing up my body in the process, Trying to sort through all the crap in my life I took up fly fishing. Not to sound like an absolute hippy, but man, there IS a zen to it. Being a newbie to it all as well, you get so caught up in the where and the how and forget to ask the why? Why does a salmon do what it does? Why do trout prefer certain types of water? That's what matters. That's what gets us so lost in the flow and that is also what helps a person deal with the everyday.

Anyway, Good short, check it out!

Oh maaaaan! The valley I grew up in pops up at 4:11. Makes me mega homesick! Thanks for the share, dogmeat.

I've struggled a lot the last 10 years or so with the work/recreation balance. I take my career seriously, but I can't seem to give up fishing to put more effort into the career, even though I'm tempted to at times. After living in NYC for two years, I was daydreaming daily about the kinds of Montana streams in this vid, so I had to get away. The Island seems to be a great place to pursue the balance. It's a place where (near) sanity is achievable ;)

For me, it's a bit of a mixture of what the people in the video were saying.

I remember growing up as a kid on spin cast gear and trolling. Then when I got a little older, I was handed my Dad's old fly rod. Never took a course or anything and just started using it. Something I could tell was happening, as I felt more passionate about fishing then than I did the summer prior to that.

I got out of fishing for a variety of reasons for about 8-10 years or so. I ended up with my career which can be high stress...and not so pleasant at times. We moved here and I knew i wanted to get back into fishing. I went out a couple of times and then early 2012 i took a fly tying course. I entered my new obsession.

I get out on the water and don't think about anything except finding the elusive trout that sometimes will hit my fly. I am by no means the greatest fly fisher in the world and am still learning, however the hunt for them is part of the excitement.

I tend not to hang out with people from work and make a very conscious decsion about that. There is only one guy that I do. he and I obsess about fishing/hunting and shooting.

I love getting out with the fly club where there is no work talk only tales of the water. I guess I make it pretty obvious that I don't hang out too much with collegues as I have been asked a few times, "where DO you go on days off, no one ever sees you around town?" = mission accomplished.

When I added fly tying to the compliment it only worsened the obsession. It is like reloading ammunition for hunting/shooting. You are enabling yourself to get lost with yourself...if that makes any sense.

At 6 years old my oldest daughter is becoming a bit of a trout bum. I cannot wait for the day to buy her a kids combo fly rod. She even ties flies with me every now and then. I just did a little (4 minute) video of her tying her 3rd and 4th flies yesterday. I will try and post but it takes so long to upload.

Why do I fly fish? Because I can, and I NEED to.

That was great video.. I'm impressed..

I can related to the video, as I came from the large corporate world, filled with people scrambling to get ahead and making sure they socialized with the right people in the corporation. Where the next guy would screw you in a heartbeat. And where I've been lied to so many times, I believe no one. Looking back, isn't about the job, or right neighbourhoods or right friends. That whole corporate scenario was such bull$hit. There's nothing more to say about it ..

For myself, my fly fishing gives me a sense of what I'm suppose to be. It connects to who I am. For myself, I need to be on the water or at the tying bench, they are places where I am at one with myself.

Watching that video makes me want to go fishing

There is no doubt fishing brings me peace and relaxation. I have noticed this more so over the last few years where I have not had the time to go as often as I used to.

Many of you have seen this already, but this is why I do it. http://www.flyfishbc.com/forums/threads/7582-Why-I-fly-fish
My 90 year-old mom asked me once "What do you think about when you are fishing" and my reply was simple: "I don't think about anything, I just fish."
Yup. I think it takes back to where we are mean to be, the same instinct that pulls a fish back to its home waters is what drives us to the whacky things we do... who would have thought hucking chicken feathers and hooks in an attempt to fool a fish to bite would be ... so.... enthralling?

Thanks Dogmeat...
Eventhough we have been in Mexico for the past 2 weeks fly fishing was on the top of the things to do..I won´'t normally go anywhere unless there ar efishing opportunities ..like last year in Morocco...tried to get to the Atlas Mountains for some wild strain Brown Trout but our timing was inline with Hurricane Alice and we were rained out..this year in Mexico out of 14 days there was rain 13 days...and we did fish here..landed 6 tarpon, some Bonefish and had 3 Permit on briefly..leaving today to seek some good Vancouver Island Fly Fishing time on Tuesday..it is those moments when you are in the moment with rod/reel/line/fly/ and wonder...great thread...nice video

It gives me a connection with the universe, it fulfills the hunter gather part of me, it's a meditative discipline for me. I fly fish as it lets me be me in that I can be OK in the moment, and that has a residual effect. I read somewhere that some people go to church and think about fishing while some go fishing and talk to God. The last part works for me.
