Hi to all, I'm new to the site and heading to Tofino for the first time Easter week end. I'm wondering is there any fishing opportunities this time of year. I will be the only fisherman so I would guess a charter is out of the question.
Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks

This is a great time to be in the tofino area. If your inot sea run cutties at all. They spawn in march and then follow the salmon fry back down, geuorging on them in order rehabilitate themselves from their spawn. If you have a small boat or are able to rent one. the tofino area offers tones of protected waters, with endles shoal and estuaries to explore. There are also tributarys of sprout and great central that will have similer oportunitys, And there may still be the odd winter steelie kicken around. I should note, I have not fished this area that time of year. but i have fished sea runs easter weekend on other parts of the island. SFOTF also did an episode of doing exactly this in tofino a few years back. Ill see if I can find you a link.

tight lines, Mike

Tofino!

Hello there, banned member. If you can get to Charter River while you are in Tofino, you would have a great opportunity to fish for Atlantic salmon. Several years ago one of the largest salmon farms on the West Coast had a total escapement of their farmed Atlantics. There was a bit of a fuss over that, but the DFO (Department of Fisheries and Oceans) kept it relatively quiet...the Feds are in favour of salmon farming. No one was very worried about the escapement because everybody assumed that the farm fish just don’t survive, least of all return to spawn. That was then. Charter River at one time was a salmon-bearing stream, but poor logging practices and other habitat degradation have wiped out the original salmon stocks and the small run of summer steelhead. Just a few years ago a DFO team was surveying some of the damaged salmon rivers on the West Coast and were shocked to find that Charter River was now home to a thriving population of Atlantic salmon. They start returning in March each year and make wonderful sport. They are 12-15 lb fish and take a skated dry fly willingly. When you get to Tofino, contact Wilfred Pennington. He is the only licensed guide on the Charter.

The original post from Wheives is a cut and paste of an earlier post (even the same title) by zaconb in 2008. Every, single one of Wheives' threads are stolen posts from the archives here. This is person is one major d-bag.
