I debated posting this because I'm not a beach flyfisher (I am a ff'ing hack for river coho and ct, and trout in lakes but not for sea run ct off the beaches), however I was hoping to compare notes about the beach season that was with other like minded ct anglers.

Personally, I had 12 outings to the beach where I hooked 52 fish and landed 35. Very good numbers of fish, particularly in May and June. Biggest fish to hand was 16", hooked/lost others that were that size.

My group of 3 anglers hooked 68 and landed 47 ct between us: 32 wild ct ( 23< 30 cm and 9 > 30 cm) and 12 hatchery ct < 30 cm (no hy were greater than 30 cm), and 3 that we didn't get a bead on.

Care to share the results of your season? You may not keep an OCD journal like mine, but even your anecdotes would be interesting.

Cheers

No other cutthroat beach anglers have any stories about their season? I tried flyfishing on a couple of occasions but it was unproductive, and since I like catching ct more than I like flyfishing, I switched to my ever present spinning rod on both occasions. :)

Throughout the season there are always a couple of fish that stand out. This journal entry from June is about one such a fish that I had brief encounter with:

Little on the slow side and fairly weedy as the tide flooded, but it cleared toward the end of the evening as the tide ebbed. Hooked 3 landed 2: one 13” wild and one little guy. He looked to be mis-clipped so I would call it a hy. Some good size jumpers tonight. The fish hooked/lost was interesting. As I lifted the lure from the water he boiled at it. So I did a short cast and could feel him bumping it on the way in. So I did a real short cast and as I was dragging the lure with my rod, he hit in close a rod length away. A quick jump and he was gone.

Last ask for 2015 beach ct stories! :)

I was fishing a surface slider type lure in the CR area. I had a couple of half hearted takes when suddenly a large head came out of the water and engulfed my fly. In an instant it turned and headed out into the current. The line was gone and 100 feet of backing was ripped off the reel in one long run. After getting over the shock of the first run and getting settled in for the fight I was very disappointed when the hook popped out before I could get a close look at the fish. My estimate based on what I saw and felt was a fish of at least 4lbs and maybe as large as 6lbs but I will never know. The one thing I do know is fishing surface flys for cutties is a lot of fun. Seeing the boils, follows and takes makes for a very interesting day. If you have not tried surface flys give it a try, you might have a hard time going back to sub surface flys.
