We're planning our summer getaway on the west coast of VI. We'll do the usual trolling and maybe mooching, but a lot of the bays and lagoons have mackerel, which are easy enough to catch on gear. Could I target them with fly gear? I've bucktailed for coho, but getting a fly deeper might be an issue. I thought that if it could be pulled off without too much fuss or expense, it would be a lot of fun. Any thoughts?

Never done it myself, but over on FWR, Rodney Hsui had a video of fishing for mackerel in Ucluelet harbour and one of his group is flyfishing.

Hey Clarki, we don't normally allow links to other forums, but in this case it's a link to a blog post on his website, so no problem in my opinion. Be cool to see how it's done on the fly. I know they were thick in the Bamfield harbour a couple years ago and one of the members on here was having a blast catching them on the fly.

And everyone wonders were all the traffic has gone on this site, with newer members get scolded for providing good information, who really cares if you get directed to another forum, I myself am on about 8 different Fly fishing related forums, is this a new requirement of this forum that we can't speak of other forums, especially to help provide good information.

I don't know if you are trying to protect the content of this site, but you are driving it into the ground. The culture in this forum needs to change, and fast, with more supportive comments and to stop the bashing of members, whether they are posting links to other forums or of members posting hero shots, you need to keep you negative thoughts to yourself and quit intimating newer members, and maybe this forum will become more active again.

Lol really ?

Give the guy a break Raven. You talk about a need for more supportive comments but in the same breath you are being very UNSUPORTIVE.

Just sayin

I just realized I posted the comment thinking I was logged on to BCFR. I am not a moderator here so it was not my place to comment anyways. It is however a forum rule on BCFR to not quote content from other forums, not sure about here. The post had a link to a website which is done all the time.

Sorry, I did realize I was posting a negative comment, and really sorry it was directed towards Big Green, as my frustration is not with him solely. I was hoping that my post would help others realize some of the current issues, and that hopefully will see some positive change.

No worries Raven, it's all good, thank you for clarifying. There is some great content out there that should be shared and discussed!

The traditional way to fish for mackerel in the UK is jigging feathers, usually 6 or 12 hooks on your line. Any old feather, any old colour. I would think you could get your line down deep by dropping on a downrigger and then pulling the flyline out of the clip.
