Hey guys,I am going to build a four piece spey rod.
I have never built a four piece.
Do you need spine them?
The pieces are pretty short to be bending that way.
Do I just put it together and sight to make sure it is straight and go from there.
Any input appreciated.

I built a 4 peice 3wt 7'6" this year and spined it. It has sweet action. I would recomend spining any rod that you build. Even the short peices are not that hard to spine. I used our glass topped coffee table to place the end of the rod on to spine it.

I also built a couple of 4 pce rods this year, and I found the spine on 7 of the 8 sections. On the one tip section, I couldn't really tell where the spine was, so I made my "best guess" based on feel and visuals. It seems to have worked fine tho' as the rod casts very smoothly.
On a related note; Cabelas has a spine finder. Looks like a weighted piece of plastic which you place on a blank that is supported at both ends and it puts downward pressure on the blank. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t...s&Ntx=mode+matchall&Nty=1&Ntt=spine&noImage=0 Has anyone tried one??
