Well now I'm pissed at the sale of this site . I was going to talk about how mods should receive some sort of financial or in-kind compensation for their time and effort, but now I could give a rats a$$.

Talk about selling out. Talk about all manner of unethical sideways BS.

This same advertisement crap happened to www.speypages.com when it got sold/bought out.

I'm done with this site, and I'm done with any other site that sells out to big oil interests.

Double middle fingers. Not cool

Shame shame shame

Ha, about as much use as their ads on TV. Most of these ads are directed at you by Google. Might I suggest AdBlockPlus.....

I could care less about how I could block them. It's the principle of the thing. I should not have to go to any lengths to block adds from oil companies when on a site about sports fishing. This was never an issue before, so I blame the new management, not google, not my lack of adblockers.

If the new ownership of our site and speypages are not able to clean up their acts and conform to general ethics and principles that support fish and fisheries, then I'll have little else to do on these sites except to remove my participation and spend my energies denouncing this direction.

I do not recall any sort of oil ads when Rick Berg was running the ship, nor did I recall anything of the sort when Jason joined him.

Really taking this one to heart as I used to value this site highly, but now couldn't be bothered to do much more than b!tch and moan. So sorry for the negativity, but it's so discouraging to see a place that was once fun and grass roots become a playground for bottom feeder advertising.

It's like having an add for cigarettes in a cancer ward.

If this site wants to sell out to big oil and big business, so be it.

I haven't seen this ad myself but can understand your shock and horror.
Perhaps, however, it might be worth trying to change the situation before bailing.
I'm pretty sure I would be following you if it didn't change though.
Maybe someone with the know-how and desire could start a new site, maybe with a small fee to avoid ads or a commitment to only fishing related ads...

I have not seen any ads as I use Adblock plus. However, I agree that these sites are not the place to be advertising the potential for wholesale environmental destruction. I will pay attention and will consider possibilities. Since this site was recently purchased, I expect the new owners to be wanting a return on their investment, and since membership is currently free, how else would one expect them to make a profit except through advertising.
As members each and every one of us needs to consider what we are comfortable with and choose accordingly.

There are other sites that are not based on pure advertising, Pm me if interested. It seems the membership of the aforementioned sites are growing with the recent take overs. In no way am I trying to sink the ship but I dont care for the BS they brought with them.

I hate that form of advertising.
Not every web site I visit is done for pleasure.
I remember checking out an "alternative health" site to see what BS they were spewing and spent the next two weeks looking at the smug bastard's mug every time I came here and some other sites.
Makes me hesitate to visit pipeline sites to see what crap they are saying which in many ways interferes with the democratic process as it lessens ones inclination to be well informed...
Imagine going to the Conservative's website to check on something and then being subjected to weeks of Harper's grinning lizard face!

I know some are basing it on principle, but I use Mozilla and turn on Ad-blocker or what ever it's called...

Voila, no ads.

Google directs ads at you based on your browsing history. If you look at lots of pr0n then you get lots of ads for escorts and dating agencies. If you Google pipeline related stuff then you will get ads related to pipelines and the oilpatch. That is why Google is such a giant on the web.

I've done some basic stuff with Google Adsense and Adsense administrators can make "offending" ads not show up in the admin panel, either by category or individual ads. Just sayin'

What the hell is the point in ads if we all block them anyhow? Wont they lose revenue then and shut down the site? Just a thought.......
