I'm just wondering how SRC fishers are doing out there. The comox valley/ campbell river area has been all miss and no hit over the last month.

With the sunny weather, I've been seeing lots of bait fish activity around dusk but not during the day. There don't seem to be too many salmon fry on the beaches. But I have seen cutts boiling and jumping in the evenings, usually just beyond casting distance (time for a 5wt switch rod).

How 'bout you? Have you been fishing the beaches. Given the lack of rain, are the salmon fry late or early in your neck of the woods?

I did pretty well early on the Juan de Fuca side. Lately it's been a lot of smaller fish punctuated by the occasional good one. Fishing larger poppers seems to have alleviated hooking the -10" trout. Fry and trout do seem to be holding a little further off the beach lately as the sun gets high and the tide gets low.

super solid season on the east side of the strait here . winter fish in-stream was good and the water was high all season , around here , that means that the fish had a low mortality rate in-stream from otters . otters kill most large sea run cuts in low water conditions in smaller rivers and streams . after a few low water winters in a row , only smaller fish on the beaches here . but, after a few high water seasons , fish size not only goes up with salt fish seeing there 2 or third spawn ... but they have a chance to spawn undisturbed and fish and fry numbers both in-stream and on the beaches go up . this season we had some 18-20 inch fish and I am stoked to sea what size fish are on the beach come august .

good luck on the tide guy .... patches-D

Interesting. The present abundance of otters around the urban spots I fish could be part of the explanation as could the ever to frequent winter oil tank failures we've had the last few years. The bobber and worm crew have been pounding it pretty hard as of late as well, but that seems to go in classic predator prey cycles.
No shortage of trout (or otters) in other, more natural areas.

I'm having a very good season. For May and June I've hooked 41 fish and landed 27. Lots of little fish (which is always a good sign of recrutiment) however good numbers of fish in the 12"-15" range. Biggest to hand is 16", and I lost one in the same range last night. Have had a couple of other tanks come unbuttoned too.

However, true confession time... All these fish have been caught with ultralight spinning gear on 1/8 oz spoons. I've been spin beach fishing SRC's for 20+ years, however I am a flyfishing hack, and this is my first year ff'ing the beaches. Last night I started off with the flyrod, got squat, picked up my spinning rod and went 3 for 5 in the remaining 1.5 hours. It's really hard to put in the time with the flyrod when I can catch fish so readily with my uiltrlight spinning rod. However I have 2.5 more months to press into it. One of these days, I'm going to leave the spinning rod at home entirely :)

Believe me, once you get it dialed in your gonna love it. I use long leaders and bead head flies to get in the zone. A lot of fish are suprisingly close to the shore and go undetected as people run up to make their first cast. Creep, crawl, be patient and stay away from water Bourne casts. Good to hear you are having the luck, now you know the fish are there.....leave the spin gear at home and give the fly rod a chance. Anti-reverse reels take the fun out of it😆

Clarki, I am yet to catch a sea run on the fly myself, or a spin caster for that matter. I went to the beach last week with my buddy who is teaching me the ways of beach fishing and he caught one though. First SR cuttie I had ever seen in person. Pretty small too, 6-7". It's my goal for this summer to catch one.
