Hey there everybody. Just wondering what everyone's opinion on my coho fly selection is for the upcoming season and if I should add anything to my pink salmon selection for the ongoing season. I tie the handlebars on 9394 tmc #8, as well as the California Neils in blue, green and pink, Then I tie the baitfish fly on a 811s #6 I tie them in pink, brown, and green. Tell me what you think! Look like the ones in my box! I overlap the pink plastic a bit more on some. Gives off a bit more light and probably causes a little more turbulence. Wether or not that works ??? I also have a number of size 6 Pink Eves and Silver Thorns for coho.

Those will fish.

Just a tip on the Cali neals...I like to strip one side off the grizzly hackle, then coat the body with UV fly finish, wind the hackle on, tie it off, then hit the fly with a uv light. It helps to cement the hackle stem into the body, protecting it from breakage, and makes counterwrapping with wire unnecessary. Makes a neater finish as well, without interferring with any hackle fibres. I would tie some w/ red and orange bodies as well.

Awesome thanks for the tips!! I will try that out next time, do you use diamond braid for the body? And I was wondering about colors I have heard guys doing well on reds and yellows for coho, so maybe I will tie up some Cali Neils in red and then tie the bait fish pattern in mickey Finn colors as well....

Diamond braid works. I use Lazerwrap (Dollarama kiddie pool strips), some over silver tinsel, some over green/red/orange floss (to tone the flash down) Hook sizes 6-10. I wouldn't fill your whole box yet. Just tie a few varieties and home in on colors/patterns more once you see what's happening on the beach.

Thanks a lot for all your help. I always leave room for more in the box but I like to have a selection of proven flies because it seems to me year to year the same patterns produce on the beach. I like to fish a small amount of flies and have confidence in them instead of overwhelming myself on the beach.

The tip of using resin here is genious. Thank you sir! Wire always is my least favorite part of tying neals. Fiddling with it all back through the hackle, causes some ragy moments for me at times. LOL. Off to the bench! :p

Here are a few of my beach ties. The Clouser is a good Coho fly but too heavy from the beach, OK from a boat or in the river. The blue one is a Notre Dame Neal (blue and gold). The bead head handle bar works well in a current flow. BTW I use the Loon UV Clear fly finish seems to work well.

@herkileez - I tied a few neals up w/ the resin instead of wire, worked like a charm! Thanks. I tied some up in Green, Blue, Copper and Red. I will post a few pics later. I am loving the nice tidy hackles it leaves! :) I also found I can still lay down a wire wrap over the lazer wrap / diamond braid if I still want the look of the wire, then resin coat it, then lay down a hackle and set it hard. Works great!

Here are some of my coho ties so far. Not the greatest pic. I have tied a couple Neals palmered, but I am kinda liking the bushy look w/ the whole hackle. I think the sparser palmered ones may work better as the fish sit around a while, and I will probably tie them palmered and sparse down into 8 and 10 for that situation. Otherwise, I am liking these and I can't wait to hook a few coho on them. :)
