bucktail trolling speed

i have recently takin an interest in the saltwater side of fly fishing and have read, been told, and read again that trolling a bucktail is the way to search out coho. however i have heard very different opinions on how to troll like this exactly. i have heard to troll at 6-8 knots which to me seems really fast after always using terminal tackle for trolling which is trolled fairly slow. so far i have had no luck trolling a bucktail on the surface along kelp beds, through bait balls, behind wash rocks, and no luck. its now the beginning of august 2009 Im resideing around the esperanza inlet on VI's west coast any info on how to troll bucktails would be helpfull especailly speed and distance to troll fly behind boat.
