    Default Stonefly nymphs

In anticipation of this summer's trout streams, I have been tying up some sonefly nymphs. I came across some instructions on weaving bodies and decided to give the technique a try. I am using embroidery yarn for the woven bodies and treating it with colour preserver to keep the colour of the body when the fly is in the water. The 2 colours really give the fly a segmented look and the type of weave I am using makes the nymph body flatter and wider than a wrapped body would be.

    Default Very Nice

    Good looking bugs Proff.
If you want some yummy looking bodies without the bother of colour preserver try Ultra Chenille or similar.
    Works great.
I have used regular chenille as well, but the Ultra Chenille is nice.
I have also done them up with crystal type chenille and uktra chenille.
    Those are horny looking.
I will do some up and post them.

    Good job.
    Where are we going fishing.

The only problem with the ultra chenille, that the bodies are bulkier. I don't mind the hassle of the colour preserver, I do up a half dozen bodies and treat them and set them aside and do the thoraxes of a bunch I have done previously. The colour preserver also gives the bodies a harder, more durable (I hope) body to the fly.

    Default small

    Use the extra small.
The nymphs are nice and chewy then.

I just did up one with the micro ultra chenille. I'll post a pic once it dries off. The body looks OK, but the range of colours is not what it is using the embroidery yarn. I know I'm being picky, but I like the greater degree of subtlety I can achieve with the yarn. (And I am having a hoot developing this set of flies)

    Default High Stick

    I love fishing stoneflies.
Takes are usually very aggressive and the fish seem quite P.O.'d when they discover that they have been duped.
We will have to get out for some fishing rogether and compare notes.

    Default First attempt

This is my first attempt at a stonefly, its meant to be a golden stonefly. I used 20lb line wrapped for the abdomen over flattened lead wire. I think it needs a darker dorsal side, but i'm not sure exactly what the naturals look like.

Any constructive criticism will help, thanks!.

I can't enlarge the attachment to see what you have there. The only problem with having a mac is these attachments just come up as code. Here is another example of a GS nymph: http://www.danica.com/flytier/lwilli...lden_stone.htm

    Default Fancy

That fly looks pretty good to me.
Kep that up and you will be one of those Fly as art guys.
When I fish stoneflies I tend to hit some pretty heavy water and the fish only have a second to decide if they want to eat or not. Therefore I use more impressionistic tied in the round flies. Thanks Charles Brooks. High stick heavy fly,add lead if required.
Once the nymphs are migrating into slower water I might have to go to something more imitative to fool them.
    Have fun.
