    Default Tying vise- which one?

    Hi guys,

I need to upgrade my fly tying vise. At first glance it seems there are millions of options and I was looking for some tried-and-tested advise. I don’t have too many specifications but I am looking for a vise that can be adapted for tube flies. I don’t tie tiny or huge (less than size 20 or bigger than 1/0) normally, so a huge range is not top priority. In terms of cost, I am pretty flexible. If its worth spending the extra cash, I’ll go for an expensive one if its worth the extra over a middle range model, but I’m not sure if you get a lot more for paying a lot more?

What do you use? How do you rate it? Any I should avoid? Bobbin holder or not?

    Any advise would be appreciated!

Oh, and if you have any spare ones that you don’t need… what’s your price?

    Thanks

    Default Snowbee-Waldron Vice

I am very partial to this simply because not only do I use this vice but also have them in our store...very simple and ingenious design...
Since really tying tube flies has become a large part of my ritual I have used only this vice...sold the Nor-Vice ,although very nice , and a few of the others are ok but this vice is it...a tad expensive though..."snowbee.co.uk"...

I was looking for a new vise a few years ago and everyone recommended the traveller.
You are looking at the right time, should be able to find a few deals at the Tradex show this weekend.....

Have a Renzetti Traveller as well. Not a bad little vise. Holds hooks quite well and is light/small enough that I have been able to bring it along for the past few trips with me to Japan.

    Default Still no decision...

    Hi guys,

Thanks for the advise. I've been reading online, magazines and checking them out in a shop and i'm not any closer to a decision! I'd like a vise with a base, but i've never used one and i'm worried that they slip a lot?
    Any experiences with this?

I just got the dan vise for christmas, and i love it. It is the first rotary vise i've used and i will never go back. The one I have doesn't have a base but I'm pretty sure you can get a model with a base. Hope this helps. Good luck in your search.
    Cheers

    Default Base

    Go for the base.
Just plop it down and tie.
A little heavier to transport, but who cares, it's not like you are hiking with it.
    Are you?
I have used pedastal bases for years and love them.
They give you the option of moving the vise away from you and having your elbows on the table for those marathon tying sessions.

    Have fun and good luck.

    Oh yah.
I can recommend the Regal vise.
For all around tying it is great.
Make sure it is a genuine Regal and not a knock off.
I have the one that rotates. Not the full on Rotary but you can turn it by hand.

    Smile Advice on a Vice?

thanks for the info. on vices as I am planning to go to a pedestal/base style as well. I tied a fly last night on a pedestal vice and it didn't slip or move around and I am heavy-handed.
I like the idea of moving it around.

Now....to start looking for a pedestal vice that is the best bang for the Buck?

Any other Brand names folks can recommend?

    Default Good Questions

For me, the best tying vices I have tied on are the Stenzel and the Snowbee Waldron pedestal vices...on teh expensive side but clearly major players with excellent value and quality. The Nor-Vice,Bergstrom,and Renzetti are other good options..

I have an Atlas rotary and love it. I have also heard many good things about Danvise as well.
