    Default looking for floaters

a local fly artist (and a lot of you are artists) was talking to me of a floating bodied fly with maribo over the foam . ...now what you tie would be up to you..i would be interested to see how a leach with this kind of body would float up off bottom as your sink line drags down below. this is what is needed flooded lakes like we have here, the fly might avoid the logs that are all over the bottom. he said that some of you mountain boys use this tec' in the lakes with dragons....i think it has some good applications...but i do not tie so i thought i would see your thoughts on this subject.

    Default mmm hmmm

    Hey Patches.
There are a lot of floating dragon patterns out there.
My fave is the all deer Gomphus.
    I will post one later.
I have tied floating leeches before. They are awsome after dark.

    Cool

Patches, that is an interesting concept for lakes with log debri. Most floating patterns I have seen/used are specifically to keep the fly in the zone, or are chara weed and marl lake bottom based patterns.
Floating dries on/or in the surface film, caddis are usually tied to swim just under the surface, dragons are effective above chara weed and boatmen are used on sinking lines to immitate the downward intial motion with the tip dragging the fly vertical and then back up on the retrieve.
I would be concerned with logs in the water, that my fly line would sink into the debri and drag a fly with it when retrieved and hang it up. If this was the case, I would rather fish the leech on an intermediate sinking line and count down to the zone I wanted to fish and retrieve.
I have also fished leeches under a strike indicator and tied leech jig patterns to suspend the fly over cover while keeping my line clear of obstructions.
Just my and I would be interested to hear how this technique works out for you.
That's the great thing about thinking outside the box, you may come up with successful techniques that others haven't used. :beerchug:

    Default floaters

ya thanx i get a limited fly selection here . i try to buy as many flys when i leave the coast as possible .i like the concept of it .some times the big cutts just lay down deep and sulk on the bottom ...and that means in the wood . if i can just skim that fly along the top of the wood it should work grate! i lose a lot of flys for every big cutty....it ant cheap to get a 25'+ cutty some times! i think that this would come in handy while the full moon is in swing....i try to avoid fishing the lake fish on a full moon phase but... if i can go real slow and pull it on bottom i know it will change all that !

Do you usually fish only leech patterns for them and if so, have you considered trying a modified leech pattern with chain eyes? This would make the hook point ride up and should prevent as many snags. My next choice would be tying something with a modified weed guard.

This type of leech should work on a sink tip or sinking line depending on water depth. Have a look at this picture and the link...

If you don't tie and would like to try this type of pattern, shoot me a PM and I tie up a couple for you to try.
