I used to tape but found that the there can still be slippage even with tape so I've stopped taping them.
Wax, Loon's Grafitolin Ferrule Wax and surgical tubing, preferably black, matches rod color better. Cut 1/2" lengths of surgical tubing in different diameters, 3/8", 1/4", 3/16". Put the appropriate sized surgical tubing pieces on the male sections of the rod just below the ferrule after the rod sections are together. After the rod sections are together lube the ferrule with a little bit of saliva and then push, slide the surgical tubing piece up on to the ferrule mid section. To take the rod sections apart or check for tightness, lube with saliva just below the surgical tubing and then push, slide the surgical tubing piece down below the ferrule. These surgical tubing pieces stay on the male sections of the rod at all times ready to go.

I have just recently stop using Loon's Grafitolin Ferrule Wax because of recommendation from rod builder Robert Meiser, but still using surgical tubing. Any wax over time can actually ruin ferrule joints. Nose oil is not a good idea either because it has salt in it, corrosive. It is recommended to use U-40 Ferrule Lube twice a year on all ferrules. U-40 Ferrule Lube fills any mismatching area of the ferrule giving a better over all fit, thus allowing the ferrule to mate up much better and stay together better. The ferrules still come apart easily when breaking the rod down. Clean off all the old wax with lighter fluid, soft rags and Q-tips. Then apply U-40 Ferrule Lube. Wipe down the rest of the pole with soap, water and then Pledge Furniture Wax periodically.
