can you imagine a river that enters a canon right from the ocean and is full of large deep shaded pools.after several km of canon it would open up into a chain of 7 main lakes and several smaller feeder lakes.there would be every species of salmon and winter and summer steelhead.rainbows ,cutts and dollies. now think about a 200+ foot dam and the flooding of most of the habitat and the end of steelhead and salmon. thats eagle river .its by my home. now , it will never be what it was but they opened the dam so the last of the salmon could come in the low end.(the last 1 km of habitat for sea run fish )after over 50 years of destruction . the thing is there was low water in lang creek at the time they let the dam go on eagle.they enter basically the same bay.all the hatchery fish that were waiting for water in lang went into eagle and stated seeding the river with new genetics....maybe it will work maby not..but given the first chance the fish went for it ,with no intention of this by man. and maybe if groups like the' friends of eagle river' keep trying to work with the industry's then rivers like eagle may have a chance to make a come back from what they have left for habitat . this watershed is one of my passions , its amazing from the top to bottom.you will hear more of this place soon ,for its one of my largest battles in the fisheries to date .and she needs help.
