    Default Question About Hooks

Hey All. Since I havent really tied forever, seeing all these hook choices has me somewhat befuddled. I get the Mustad C49S series type for scuds, shrimp and chroni's but can someone tell me what the long curve (Mustad C53S type) would be best used for or why I would choose it over the standard 2X? Is it primarily for drys so the hook sits deeper in the water? Better shape to nymphs?

    Any help is appreciated.

    Cheers.

These long curved are the one hook style I use the most. I use them for leeches and damsel fly nymphs (gives them awsome shape!) and Ialso tie doc spratleys, cary specials, woolybuggers etc. I love these hooks. They just make awsome shapes for those flies I listed. I have tied chronies on size 16 long curved. Hope my rant helps!!!

If your looking at stocking up on hooks, might want to check out Canadian Llama, one of the site sponsors. Great prices on hooks, and I've had nothing but great experiences with purchasing from them so far.

    Cheers.
I use Tiemco 200R a lot for both dries and for nymphs that do not have to be heavily weighted (micro leaches, damselflies, etc).

I buy a lot from Canadian Llama, but I really wish he dealt with Tiemco hooks. I use C49S by Mustad for chronomids, but I really have too many failures with most of the other Mustad series to ever consider tying with them. Tiemco are by far my favorite and go to hooks. I do pay attention to the requirements of the fly I am tying, so I have dry, nymph, scud, humped, salmon, etc hooks in a wide range of sizes and don't try too often use a hook for a purpose it isn't intended for.

Thanks Guys. I do like the shape of the mustads but they seem so... flimsy.. except for the 49S series I've been hesitant after bending a couple. I'm too used to the Partridge Salmon hooks.. I will definitely take a look at the Tiemco's.

I breifly looked through the Llama site but as the Prof said they dont have the Tiemco's so maybe I'll give the Daiichi's a go. And, after reading the Chronomid thread I think I will be looking for some sort of bead kit as well. I havent seen anything around town so an order to Llama may kill 2 birds so to speak. Cheers

Canadian Llama beats any price I have ever found for beads by a country mile.
