    Hey Surfly,

Welcome to the site. BC fresh water fishing regs.....

    http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/fw/fish/regulations/

I honestly have never looked at what the costs are for people visiting the country, and have never heard that non residents require guides to fish the rivers. I'm sure someone will weigh in on that statement. Might be the case for specific rivers, I'm not 100%.

    Welcome to the site surfly...
the only area in Canada where a required guide is needed is in the eastern part of the country where Atlantic Salmon are basically the
target species..and in some cases Sea Run Speckled Trout..In BC there is no guide requirement yet and likely will not happen for some time..although a great conservation approach. In BC we have so many opportunities ,yet these have all been badly mismanaged to a point now where there are restrictions on classified waters where the costs seem to be high but go golfing for a day and you will quickly change your mind.
I personally grew up in New Brunswick where the Miramichi River was my home river ..what I saw a youngster was an almost total collapse of the Atlantic Salmon fishery while in my mind I sort of came to the realization that they would respond in such low numbers that there would be no fishing. Fortunately there was a bit of wisdom spread about and the fishing has rebounded well...on your side of the border there is also so good news with dams removed and waterways enhanced. Look at the rebound of the Stripers, good news..
    again..welcome

Non resident alien fees are quite a bit higher, You can find out if you google it. Fishing guides are not required here but may be a good idea if you don't have knowledge of the country and water.

Here you can buy a license online it will show you all the costs associated before you actually have to pay so you can figure it out.. Steelhead and Salmon tags get pretty expensive for out of province anglers, my dad came out steelhead fishing a couple years ago and I think he paid around $100 or more for 10 day license with a steelhead tag. A guide is not necessary but I'm sure it's very helpful for getting into some fish..

Surfly, if you are fishing classified waters, you will need to get a daily license for those waters at $40 a day (Class I) or $20 a day (Class II). Your annual license fee is $80.

I find people in BC have no concept as to how incredibly cheap it is to fish here, for residents, NRs and NRAs alike.

Three days in Scotland for myself and my fishing partner this upcoming year is going to be over $1200. And that's pretty reasonable given the time of year and water body we are on. $100 for days of world class BC salmon and steelhead fishing is nothing.

There probably are a lot of fishers in B.C. who can't relate to spending large amounts of money to fish for a few days, but with the internet and members on forums such as this one who have fished around the world, we are becoming informed. We are truly fortunate to be able to fish as we do for the price that we pay. That being said, even though there are a couple of places on this planet that I would like to fish, I am content to fish in B.C. for the rest of my days as this is fishing paradise. As far as the amount you are spending to fish for 3 days in Scotland,if you have lots of $ or are willing to spend your savings to do so, well fill yer boots. I think it's a lot of coin for 3 days fishing.

$1200 for 2 people over 3 days!!! That is wild! I hope the regulating bodies put that money to good use.
