    Default Flats fishing Cancun

So I'm off to Cancun at the end of January and plan to sneak in a day on the flats on my honeymoon. I think I'm committed to heading north a bit to Isla Blanca for the day rather than fish the cancun lagoon- as much for the opportunity to NOT fish in the Cancun Hotel district as for the fishing. Anyone been to this area, and any feedback/advice? Don't say 'don't go fishing on your honeymoon' bx let's be honest, I need to set an expectation for the future here!
    cheers

Not sure who you have but it should be fine...my fellow is a good young guy with lots of knowhow but not enough $$ to really go full bore so has to sub his skills...you might even end up with him...regardless this is a fantastic area to fish...yesterday we landed 2 Tarpon and Two >Snook..nothing too large but the bigger Ones were there...the key to success here is having a great roll cast and being able to get your fly in front of the fish...best distance to be in fron tof Tarpon is about 15´feet...any closer you spook the fish...but then again there is always the darker waters...if yuo can get a 15´20lbtest tapered leader,I used Snowbee 15´12 lb leaders but had to modify them too much...so next year the 20's come with me...will post a few pics when I get back if my computer is ready

Thanks salar. I'm getting pretty excited. Tied up some deceivers and cockroaches on advice from the gent that runs the guiding outfit. Love to see pics of your fish.

Did u roast out there? I'm guessing I need my long sleeve sun blocker shirt? How long r u there? Perhaps a margarita if we overlap?!?

Hi Sparky...didn't roast but you will need long sleeve and a buff if you have one..make sure you have sun screen..absolutely good sun glasses. Fishing for thew snook is in low water about a foot or so with lots of small bushes and mangroves inteferring with small shoots going into the mangroves is where you will find the Tarpon.heaviest eyes for me were simply beadchain..will post pics later today if I can getour home computer up and running

We were in Cancun last full week of January. Fabulous weather! Left Seattle with snow still on the ground and every day was around 80 (sorry, 27 for you guys!) In past years we have been to Ascention Bay, Isla Blanca, and this time we tried Cancun Lagoon for a change. I liked them all (I was fly fishing after all!) but for winter time, Ascention Bay will by far give you more action. If you go to Ascention, plan to go for at least two days and stay down there-it is a long slow ride from Cancun. We caught 15-20 bonefish per day for both my wife and I and were treated royally at Pesca Maya. Isla Blanca was a very doable day trip from Cancun and we did well on baby tarpon and snook. Cancun Lagoon was really pretty scenic and jungle-like. It was a quick walk from the Westin Lagunamar where we stay, so very convenient. We hooked one tarpon, had several shots at snook who weren't interested and caught 3 barracuda. I would go again to the lagoon as it is a nice half day and you are back on the beach for the afternoon. All of them are lots of fun! Rick
