    Default UV Prawn

Here's a pattern that I'm going to be giving a go in the Stamp on the 4th.

It's tied on a 2/0 Salmon hook, cut off the hook and add a trailer loop. It's tied in the same approach as the traditional GP with a few modifictions. I used mono eyes instead of golden pheasant tippet. It's pretty easy to make the eyes, just take a few inch long strip of 50lbs or heavier mono and hold it to a lighter. Melt the mono tip to the size you want then dip in water to cool and set. It's pretty toxic smelling, so open a window Color the eyes with a sharpy, let dry, then coat with some sort of clear finish. I used nail polish.

In the body I mixed pink UV dub with hot orange ice dub. Once the entire fly is tied I went back through the body segments with a bodkin and picked out the dubbing to give a really bushy buggy look between the hackle wraps. This should give a lot more profile to the UV material, providing a nice glow to the fly.

The fly is not weighted, although one could easily run some lead up the hook shank before tying. I plan on fishing it deep with some heavy tips, but not so deep that it's bouncing off the rocks. The bottom two feet is my goal.

    Hope you enjoy.

Pulling the body dubbing down with the bodkin reminded me of the Baggy Shrimp fresh water patterns. Brushing out the body on those flies really makes the fly look buggy. I was hoping it would have a similar effect on the prawn pattern.

Sorry, I added them to the pictures when I uploaded them and forgot to copy them over.

Hook Shank: 2/0 Salmon with trailer loop tied on
Body: Pink UV dubbing mixed with Hot Orange Ice Dubb
Tail: Crystal Flash / Orange Polar Bear
    Eyes: 50 lbs mono melted
    Hackle: Orange Schlapen
    Carapace: Golden Pheasant died Orange
    Rib: Gold Wire

If you want to learn how to do the eyes, just google it, there are heaps of videos out there. I just used some old line I had lying around.

Tied just like the GP so there are two Golden Pheasant feathers per section of carapace, and there are three sections of carapace.

I tied a UVpolar chenille GP about 4 years ago Using burnt orange UV polar chenille. I found the best times to use it were low light situations. I also tie a krystal flash chenille ghost shrimp that works very well. I have pix of that on another site.under a bull trout swap.

That pattern would work well on surf perch in the salt! Good looking fly!

I will! In fact I'll throw up the SBS for it on my next block of days off. I found a more interesting way to do the eyes. Burn the end of some mono just enough to create a lip, slide a glass bead down to the end and either glue or epoxy it. Looks pretty cool.
