Same size or smaller, mind you, I've had a cuttie intercept a big #2 black & purple wooly bugger while sight fishing steelies on a west side flow. A nice steelie was slowly rising to check out my offering when an 18" cuttie darted in and stole the show. Not exactly what I was expecting, but fun nonetheless. So cutties are pretty agressive when in the mood and will some pretty big flies. This time of year, I like a black and blue bunny leech, or an egg sucking sculpin pattern.

Well, any spey type pattern than looks like a fry or minnow pattern will work. Cutties are quite agressive. In the winter, I like the coquihalla orange, or something like that - sparse orange shrimp fly of some kind. In the early spring, you can switch over to alevin patterns - ie. a spey fly (bronze mallard wing) with a red, orange or purple body tied super sparse as far as hackling. Go with a red or orange throat and you should have fish galore if they are around.

I hope those that tied these beauties don't mind me posting them, but I think they are killer for both cutties and steelies:

I'm likely to tie up a dozen of these as soon as I get some more bronze mallard!

Ok, so I tied this one, but it works - replace the hair wing with bronze mallard and you got something that looks a little more like a spey.

Something like this would work too.

Any who, that should give you some ammunition

Great looking ties you two. Lost those hairwing patterns for sure.
