    Default Pink Steelhead Fly

Here's one I tied up after being inspired to tie some feather wings. I've been tying so many large, buggy, leachy flies for this winters steelhead season, I thought I'd better tie some smaller, less invassive flies to add to my box. I tied several variations of this fly in a bright blue / black, and orange / yellow. Not the most traditional BC winter colors I know, but sometimes you just have to tie what you feel like fishing.

In the ingredients list, I forgot to add the four strands of Lady Amherst the flow back off the fly. I think it adds a little extra somting.

Looks sweet, but for a "fishing fly" rather than a "show fly", I'd make that hackle way way sparser. That way it will sink better and likely have better movement. I really like the pheasant tail feelers sticking out the back. The Glasso Heron style flies are producers for sure. I've yet to land a fish on one, but I lost two beauties last season on a fly like the one you've tied, but in all pink and super sparse. Also, make sure you are using 4 hackle tips and not just 2. Great tie though, should work really well in lots of different colour combo's.

I tie up one with brown hackle tip wings, natural mallard collar, grey hackle, silver body with the front 1/4 orange dubbing for cutties - works very well as a fry pattern. If you have grizzly hackles, they work great for the wing in brown, olive or natural to immitate coho fry and sculpin depending on the size you tie.

    Thanks btree,

I learned quickly about the 4 feathers for wings. LoL. Out of all the ones I tied, some were spares and some were fuller. This being my first steelhead season I tied up 2 of each pattern I decided to put into my fly box. With the exception being leeches (multiple colors), intruders, and GPs.

I then went back through and modified a few of them making them sparser, smaller, or fuller. I plan on experimenting with all of them, watching them swing, watching them sink, and makes some notes for sure. Between what I've tied and the swap I should have more then enough to keep me busy.
