I found it was ridiculously effective to cast them right along the far bank onto the shore, pop them into the water and swing or strip them as fast as they would go. Pause them every 5 feet or so, and they would get slammed on the pause, sometimes so hard a small 20" cutty would snap the 8 pnd test on the hit.
To me this doesn't seem all that odd. I dive for crayfish a lot on the mainland and island (goggles). When they are started them commonly swim backwards fast and they way their tail is causes them to rise in the water column. I've seen some "skip" or pop their tails out of the water trying to escape me for a solid 10 feet before stopping and allowing themselves to sink with their claws up.
Whatever it's imitating, it works hella good, was even working good as a dry or sub surface in that one lake I talked about. I'm sure they are taking it as a crayfish, but who knows, maybe they are seeing it as a caddis or something?
Cheers,
Dan
