Back 20 odd years ago when I lived in the UK triploid fish were common in the put and take trout fisheries. There was competition as to who could stock the biggest pig. At that time there were places with 30lb+ rainbows that were fed pellets like beef in a feed lot to attain huge weights. All these fish had minute heads and great big fat bodies. I really found the whole thing a bit disgusting but I like the idea of triploid fish not affecting the genetics of native stocks. No native stocks of rainbows in the UK, obviously. Fortunately, in BC triploids are put into lakes as no more than yearlings, at the largest, and gain their large size eating natural foods, not force fed pellets. Doesn't make them naturals, but they are more attuned to the environment than simply big, fat stockers.
