    Default Actions and newbies.

    Hey gang,

I have a question regarding action of spey rods and new casters. Is there one action that is more suitable for the new caster, slow, medium, or fast? Or does it depend entirely upon the style the new caster developes?

I'm asking because I am looking at a set up off craigslist, and won't have the opportunity to get out and actually cast any rods before making my purchase, if I make this purchase.

It's either a Fenwick Black Night Hawk, 12'6 8/9 weight or a Fenwick Eagle GT 12'6 9/10 weight. From what I've found online both of these rods are a fast action. I've also read that for the price point they are a good starter set up / back up rod.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Scott.

I don't know if there is a right or wrong answer to this one - I think it's highly personal. I still consider myself new to spey casting, but I prefer a faster action rod -not super fast, but something that feels similar to my single handed rods, all of which are either fast or med-fast action depending on how I line them.

Probably if you are athletic or like to put some power into your rod, then a faster rod will be more enjoyable for you. But if you want the rod to do the work, then a slower action might be better suited for you.
