    Default Group Get togethers

I have two weeks off from work starting this weekend. we are busy packing the truck and trailer for the next two weeks. My yard has two other trailers, friends that made the treck camping trip into the East Kootenays. The group will consist of about five families that get together on a regular basis to Camp, fish and pretty much lie about anything we can get away with. I was thinking today, we have been doing these get togethers for almost 30 years now... Most of us are Mine guys... met working in the mines together ..alot of years ago.. I love these get togethers .. these guys are like family .. we watched each other kids grow up .. and play together in the campsites over the years ... attended each others weddings and yes ... sometimes not in such good times ....but that's a fact of life ....

Is it just me ... or is this type of get togethers a dying event ..................

I'd have to agree. A few of us at work have been talking about trying to fire these kinds of trips up. Seems so hard to have people make it a priority. We've decided to just book a couple of days, 2-4, and then go. Anyone else who wants to join can tag along.

I've been talking with a few people from the site about trying to get a few days of fly fishing up at the Skagit this summer, but now my work schedule has gone all haywire. I'd sure like to see it come together though. Could be pretty sweet.

The best idea is to pick a date, contact as many buds as you want around (plus about 20% more-1 out of 5 who say they are "going for sure" will bail last minute) and let everyone know what the dates and location are. Folks who want to be there will make the trip/effort. Do it well in advance so everyone has time to make arrangements and keep pestering folks. If they miss the outing, be sure to send them lots of pictures and reports so they don't let it slide the next time.

i tried on numerous occasions to get a decent camping trip going with my group of friends back in grade 12. finally got a date, location etc. most said they'd commit to it. i had arrangements for food, fuel costs, equipment etc. i spent a good month talking to people, organizing it and all that. everyone knew what they're part would be and was willing. with 3 days to go, all but one bailed. that finished it for me. i said screw it. i'm not organizing another thing for this group. no parties, no camping trips, nothing. nobody has any commitment these days.

it's at the point now where my trips are with 1 or 2 other buddies, who i know will follow through unless something drastic happens. oddly enough, it's these 3 guys that i've kept in closest touch with since grade 12. everyone else has kind of been moved to the back burner, although we still talk and hang out when i get back home. i know however, these three guys will be at my wedding and i'll be at theirs. i've already been named the "surrogate uncle" for their future kids. i don't plan to have kids, but if i do, i know my kids and theirs will be like cousins. it's funny how you think after graduating, the world opens up, but in reality, it becomes much more focused.

family trips are another matter altogether. they end up happening once or twice a year.

I can relate to what your saying .. I have to relate an few experinces with Clubs and Online Fishing Communties. The wife and I joined a local fishing club in our communtiy .. in efforts of getting out fishing and camping with people in our communty ... We attended a BBQ get together with the local club .. once getting there, we didn't know anyone .. we approached a table of people ..and asked if the four chairs at their table, were taken .. they replied they were ,,, we thanked them and move onto an empty table in the back... The wife and I thinking .. something isn't right .. we watched those four chairs of the first table approached ... over the span of the nite .. no one came and sat in those chairs all nite ... but we were told they were taken .. I never renewed my membership ...

Another experince was with a online fishing forum .. the wife and thought we'd try a online fishing communty get together .. after spending 8 hrs with truck and trailer, after being told it was a 3 hr trek .. we get there ..and the campsite was HUGE .. everyone was spread out ... so we found a spot .. and tryed to find the fishing group .. we did find the fishing group .. they hung around in clicky groups ...I never attended another one ...

So now ... the wife and I do it alone ... having experinced the socail side of this sport ....
