Hey gang. I've got a couple questions on boat builds. I was given a nice 12 foot wooden boat that is in pretty good shape. It needs a few minor repairs to the gunnels, but besides that all it needs is to be coated. Now I'm not a craftsman of any sort, so this project will be my first and will be done without the help of anyone who knows what they are doing. I will be doing this in a semi covered space, my car port. It's totally covered from above and on one side, and I'll hang tarps down on the other two sides to prevent stuff from floating in. If the odd bit of something sticks to it during the process no big deal, it wont be a show boat.

The boat will be used almost exclusively on lakes, so no salt water exposure, or none to great anyway. So I guess now that you know the boats uses, my questions would be around what type of products to use to finish the job. I'd like to keep the wood finish look if possible, and not add a ton of weight to it if possible. I was thinking that a bit of fiberglass on the exterior hull might be in order to help with abrassion resistance when beaching it, and some sort of clear coating on the interior.

Any advice from those in the know would be greatly appreciated.

I will post some photos of it tonight when I get home.

    Thanks in advance,

So a late night getting the house ready for guests after a long day of work. No photos yet of the boat. I'll add them later this week though.
    Scott.
