Default fishing vancouver island mid jully for salmon

My familly is headed to the north island for two weeks around the middle of jully and i would love to bring a flyrod along to try for a coho or pink salmon. I will have trolling gear for salmon but i would like to try to catch one on a fly.. i have no experience ocean fly fishing but cant wait to get out and try it. i was wondering what flies i should tie and mabey some techniques i could use to target cohos. thanks for any responses.

Coho will still be mostly off shore. Perhaps some pinks will be around off the beaches though.
Chartreuse #8 and #10 clousers and handlebars seemed to outperform the pink ones last season for me, but lots of people swear by orange up here too, as well as purple.
Your best bet will likely be trolling the usual gear...

Your timing might be super this year...Btree tells it as it is,although the fly selection you consider should be expanded to include some nasty Coho Buggers..bead head in a size 6 & 8..in colours Chartreuse and Coho Blue...keep the grizzly hackle short and tight. I like a Chartreuse Polar Bear tail about 3/4 " long, another great fly for the North Island would be a large version of a "Kathy's Coat"....these flies are deadly and cast very well. Lines from flull floating to simply a intermediatet tip or clear inter' line.....I would suggest at least a #7 or a very good #6...it's about the wind...

We've been checking the beach and Campbell river every day, and have not seen, or heard of, any salmon yet.
(Except by boating, where fishing has been excellent...)
The CR and Quinsam River levels have dropped and are quite fishable, at least for trout...just need to add the pinks...stay tuned.....should be any day now.

Haven't checked the Oyster River, or Saratoga beach, Nile Creek, etc......any reports out there ?

So far we haven't seen enough Pink Salmon to actively cast...but don't let that deter you...most of the first Fish I will typically land in early Season I don't see..there are good numbers of Pink Salmon off the beach but in much too deep waters. Some of the local fishers are catching Pinks several 100 meters off the shore...also a few very small coho...we had a small pod of Orca hanging about for about a week recently but have now moved on...this will normally signal the Pink Salmon arrival or soon to be...Last years first Pink was landed on the 6th of July...conditions are different this year ,I would think more than likely about the 12th...we shall see
