Default The state of BC Steelhead

I figured I'd start this one up. Quite the topic, lots of pointy areas that will get hackles up, but it's well worth the discussion.

It seems that where ever people fish for steelies, no matter what the method, there has been an overall and well noted decline in numbers.

So discuss away. I'll try to keep my frustrations out of this one.

It should be an interesting read to say the least.

Here are some places to start your research:

I pray that by the time I get around to learning to steelhead fish, there is something left for me to at least try to catch. Ive got alot to learn before I even attempt my first steelhead, such as reading the waters

Well it seems to me that we have our fathers, fathers, fathers to blame for a large part of it. Look at old pictures and read stories of some of the first fishing done in the province, these guys absolutely massacred fish stocks. Pictures of guys with 20+ salmon beached is not unusual, stories where guys will even admit that they believe they've been overly greedy and yet will go on to repeat their excessiveness. This probably continued until modern regulations were implemented, and even then in many parts of the province there is little preventing someone from keeping way more than their catch except their own personal morality. It's a sad state, BC has been populated for a little more than a 150 years (and only in the last 75-100 years in any significant numbers) and our fisheries are already in major decline. Scary to think what the next 100 years will bring.

I kind of wonder if global warming also has its hand in the fish stocks
