Hello fellow and aspiring fly fishers, spey casters, steelhead bums and all the rest.
I just wanted to give everyone a heads up and a warm welcome to our upcoming spey day. Once again, we will be featuring some incredible world-class spey casting demonstrations, and it’s a day you don’t want to miss.
M&Y 6th Annual Spey Day
Date – Saturday April 9th, 2010
Time: 9:30 AM – 5:00 PM
Location: Peg Leg Bar, Fraser River. (How to get there instructions are posted on our website at www.myflyshop.com)
Cost – Free, just lot’s of smiles.
In what has morphed into the largest event of its kind in Canada, this conclave is the perfect day to watch some world class demos, chat with the casters and product manufacturers, receive great casting pointers from the so many rock stars hangin around and willing to pass on their expertise, and to just hang out with your pals. This is also that once a year opportunity to try out that new rod or line that you have been thinking about since most all of the major product manufacturers will be on hand with a booth to display their wares.
Spey casting, or glorified roll casting as it has been so eloquently described, has really morphed into all aspects of fly casting, so even if you don’t see a spey rod in your future, there will be plenty to learn for all! It’s amazing how the principals and fundamentals are so similar when comparing and understanding single hand and double hand casting – kind of like the unified casting theory – LOL. This event is designed for everyone from the curious who are thinking of taking up spey casting to the rock stars who want to try out the latest in spey tackle & technique. Bring along your waders and try out anything you fancy. This is a non-partisan event, and everyone is welcome.
This year’s signature guests will be none other than Simon Gawesworth of Farbank Enterprises which is the parent company of Rio/Sage/Reddington. Simon will be conducting a “Tips & Faults” demo that will surely go down as a classic, not just for Simon’s skill at casting and instructing, but for his easy going demeanor and sense of humor. Another group of key guests coming up from the south will be Brian Styskal and Greg Bencivenga who will be conducting a Nextcast demo featuring all the different Nextcast lines and the various speycasting techniques used to mater those lines.
Of course there will also be the usual contingency of M&Y talent and local gurus to round off the demonstrations. A detailed itinerary will be posted closer to the event.
There will be product representation from the likes of Sage, Rio, Reddington, Scott, Loomis, Winston, Airflo, Burkheimer, Nextcast, Scientific Anglers plus any who want to show their wares. Again an update of product representation will be posted with the itinerary within the next few weeks.
This year as in the past,– and you all get to watch Dave and Ryan flip burgers for a few hours, and get grease splattered all over their fancy Simms waders.
There will once again be a raffle held at 5:00 PM for some great prizes, but this year we are going to put a different twist on the raffle as we would like to have people buy their raffle tickets and we will donate all raffle proceeds to the BC Steelhead society. This way we don’t have to worry about ballot boxes being stuffed with names of people who are not in attendance or people choosing to fill out multiple tickets. You certainly can have multiple tickets; it’s just that you have to pay for them – lol.
Again, this is a free event and it is not for profit, it’s just that the raffle will be a good way to raise some funds for a worthy cause - next year we will probably give the proceeds to another worthwhile fly fishing related cause.
There you have it - I hope to see you there.
Sharpest of Hooks, Tightest of Loops!
