OK, finally got out on a fine mountain lake this year (the 6 week old at home has slowed down the fishing a bit). Went to Vinson this past Sunday bright and early. Left the house at 5:05, arrived in the parking lot at 6:05. After a bit of sorting out, packing the pontoon down, etc we (me and two buddies) hit the lake by 6:30. Sky was clear early but a low pressure system came in after about 1 hour, and by 4 hours in I had everything on including my gortex jacket and hood and was still cold! 6:45 had the first on by Jon on a size 8 Mikuluk sedge, unfortunately for him his first and last of the day. After an hour or so I had a hit at my size 10 Mikuluk (green) which I missed. As I was checking my fly, down goes my second rod (chromie, 5 feet down in approx 6-7 feet of water) and I'm into a 5 minute fight that I lose, but now I'm jacked. 10 minutes later I have another on the chromie in the same water and after a great scrap land a nice 26 incher. Meanwhile my other buddy Jay is into a couple (same combo. . . chironomid in skinny water, sedge floater on the other- he had one on each, biggest to 24 inches). Wind picks up, we spend an hour or so fighting the water and wind for position, and after a row to shore for anchors we hit the east end of the lake and find a quiet bay. 15 minutes in and I'm into another beauty of a 24 incher on a red butt, gold bodied bead headed chironomid (sorry, no name). Unfortunately for us, our wife alarms went off and we had to hit the pavement, but all and all a great outing. GREAT fighters at Vinson, HAMMERED the flies, even setting themselves on the chironies. 45 minutes later, we're back in Westbank (or whatever the hell those loners are gonna name their new city), 30+ weather, and a bar-b-q waiting for some trout!

Went back to Vinson yesterday morning, fished from 7:30 to 12:30 with a buddy. Weather was mixed from soft rain to blue skies, mostly overcast for the majority of the morning. Enough sun and cloud to bring on a couple small hatches (chironies and small cinnamon sedges) and spark a little surface action. Landed a beauty 4 lb. silver football on a size 14 chromie in 5 ft of water early, had a few savage hits at a bead headed leech, and lost what felt like a mid-sized bow towards the end. My buddy had a 2 lb'er in hand, lost 2-3 more. Most action was early. Nice lake but it turns on and off like THAT!
