    Default My First Spey Rod

So I have acquired a spey rod and soome would say it is not a good rod to start with but if I did not get it I would never get one again so I will try it. What I got is a Sharpe's of Aberdeen 14' 10-11 Spliced Joint Spey rod. Now my problem is I do not have a reel or line. Considering that this is my first spey rod what do the experts think I should use for a line. I am going to try and find a nice reel to match the rod. Oh by the way the rod has never had a reel on it. I will try and post some pictures of it in the next day or so.

    Hello Ross...How are your joints??!!
Lovely rod if you want to be a purest and are young...put the rod away and get something less dramatic...it is lovely for long belly fly lines and dry fly or wet fly work...on rivers such and the Kispiox,Spey,Dee,Thompson, and so on...if you want to get a line for it I would suggest a Snowbee 3D (73' head).in the 10/11 size..
will enjoy seeing the rod if you post pics

    Congrates O boy!

I got my first 11 ft. switch this year, 6 weight.

You have alot more beef there!

    I just luv learning.

But above all... I friggin adore castin, throwin, swingin, chuckin, mendin, shootin, hittin, flippin, and pitchin anything.

    A lifetime addiction.

But the spey is soooo pretty.

    Have fun mate.

    You gonna luv it.

    nuk, nuk.

Yup, I would be one of those saying that is not the ideal rod to learn how to spey cast with. You will need a very heavy reel to balance the rod, and using it during a day's worth of fishing will be a chore because of the weight. If it were me, I would keep the rod, and purchase an inexpensive 12 to 13 foot rod as my beginner spey outfit. Then for those days where I want a change of pace, I would bring out the cane rod.

I was afraid that it would not be a good first rod, and me not being a collector of rods, I should get rid of it. I just want a rod I can go out and have fun with. This rod has neve seen a reel mounted on it never mind being used. The original owner had splice protectors made for it so the joints are in perfect condition. I will take some pictures and post them if anyone is interested in a trade of some kind.

    Hi Ross...
It is a lovely rod and worth collecting or just having around. And for sure taking out on the odd occassion...but as a West Coast Steelhead or Salmon rod it isn't!...and I have to clarify West Coast Rod...I am sure you can trade it for a rod better suited to local needs...looking forward to seeing the pics..
