fishing on the beach recently and catching some good cutts, using a pattern with not much more than a long, quite long, olive rabbit strip tied zonker style. the best fish i caught that day puked up a half digested thing which i can only think was a pile worm. As far as i can tell anyway. It lookded like a leach carcass. definately wasn't a fish. about two and a half inches, and has some definate pincer type things on the end of it, and ribs from head to tail like a leach, and not in the way a fish does
anyway, point being, in retrospect the pattern caught alot of fish, several days in a row actually, and looked like a decent pile worm imitation, which got me thinking if anywone has much experience with pile worms as a cutty food source

I used to call them sandworms and we used to get them at low tide by turning over rocks. They can give you a nasty sting and they can get quite big. Biggest one I've seen was over 2ft. long.fishing on the beach recently and catching some good cutts, using a pattern with not much more than a long, quite long, olive rabbit strip tied zonker style. the best fish i caught that day puked up a half digested thing which i can only think was a pile worm. wow, two feet is a pretty big meal for a cutty. i bet they like them

we used to find them (we were told they were sandworms) as mentioned above under rocks at white rock beach at low tide, and we'd catch piling perch off the peir with them, most of the ones I saw were 2-3 inches in length but there were the occaisional longer ones (approx a foot or so), they hurt quite a bit when the big ones get you with their pincers. I have never had a cutthroat spit one out but I've seen pretty much everything else at the beach take a liking to them eg. birds flounder bullheads cabezon etc., I'll definitely give that pattern a try at the VI beaches I'm fishing

Thanks for the info. The original pattern is called the bloody nose, i got it from less Johnsons book on cuttie fishing. Came from oregon i think. white rabit strip zonker style, yellow hackle, gold body, pink thread. Also worked awsome, my best cuttie fly, then i put a longer olive strip on instead, and so far that has produced even better for me. Don't know if they are taking it as a pile worm or not, but either way it works pretty good on my beaches anyhow

tied up some tonight, incl. some variations, we'll see if the victoria/sooke cutties like it or not later this week

Here's a great pile worm pattern.
Hook: #4-#8 2x SS
Thread: 6/0 orange
Cone: gold: X-small(5/32") for #8 hook; small(3/16") for #4&6
Body: orange floss
Rib: small copper or gold wire
Tail: tan or peach marabou w/ a few strands of pearl krystal flash
Thorax: orange flashy dubbing like Ice Dub
Fish it with slow, foot long strips. I've had days when the cutties wouldn't touch anything 'til I threw this in front of thier nose.
thnx Chumley, I will throw that in the box and give it a go

no such luck on my own patterns, the rolled muddler is still king, I'll give that one a go next
cutthroat or bust
I forgot to mention that this pattern is called the Snot Dart. I think the pattern was developed in Puget Sound.Attachment 1667
