im going to be living in calgary for 2 to 3 months and im wondering if there is any decent flyfishing near the city. i know about the bow river but is there any still water around?
is there any other species of fish in alberta that are worth fly fishing for? i dont realy want to start spin casting for bass lol, but it would be cool to try and catch some different fish.
and i have been trying to find an alberta flyfishing forum but the only ones i can find dont seem to be to active, so are there any good alberta flyfishing forums anyone knows about?
thanks.
There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.
You've got policemans lake, beaver lake near red deer. Pike farther north are always fun on a fly rod. There are no bass in alberta :P Bow river is just simply amazing. Oldman river for cutthroat is near by, same with the livingstone, cataract creek for tons of beautiful little brookies. Your close to bullshead reservoir full of big rainbows (16-21"), Crowsnest river for rainbows, browns, bulls, the odd laker and cutt. The list goes on, you can PM me for some better spots up near edmonton if you want.

No Bass at all? They have to have been introduced somewhere. I do know that there's some great fishing in the Rockies around Canmore and Banff but I don't know of specific spots. The appropriate volume of the Alberta Backroads Mapbook might be a good investment.

Get in touch with Barry Mitchel of Reddeer he will point you in the right direction Richmia
Barry Mitchell writes a guide to fishing Alberta which can be purchased at most outdoors stores. Jim McLennan's good book Trout Streams of Alberta is a nice resource. Conservation Alberta publishes a list of the stocked waters around the province, it can be linked to from their web page.
Welcome to Alberta! (Even though it sounds like it's temporary... that's how it started for me...)

That may not be accurate. Island Lake, about 2 hours north of Edmonton, was stocked with Smallmouth Bass up until 1987. There was still a small breeding population remaining in 2004. Have not heard if they have been seen or caught recently though.
