I've been dabbling beach fishing for coho the past few days, been having a great time but no real success yet. I've only been out a handful of times and the fishing has been slow for everyone that was out. I haven't seen one landed yet, but I have seen a couple hooked. I haven't seen any other fly fishers out so I'm not sure if my fly selection is adequate or not. I have tied up about 20 different patterns in various colours, which I've based off flies I've seen on this site and from fly shops. My question is whether I should be using weighted flies or not? As I haven't seen many caught its hard for me to say whether I'm fishing incorrectly. Any hints would be greatly appreciated as it will speed up my learning curve.
Most of my Salmon flies have a gold or silver bead head. i have found i have more success with bead head flies, but have also caught many without any weight. It just depends, some days there on one fly the next there on something comepletely different. Also try different sizes i have used a size 4 fly for a day and then put the same one on the next day and you get the odd hit, but i tried i size smaller and had much greater success. Go through your box and just keep trying different flies or have a chat with one of the local guys that has been hookin into a few fish and maybe he will let you know whats hot right now.
The best way to a fishermans heart is through his fly.
