Nicola Valley Outdoors Fishing Report for July 21st 2010

Evenings.
The perfect time to be fishing dry flies on the lakes.

Mamette Lake appears to have a lot of activity in the evenings according to our expert source.

Nicola Lake is producing trout and kokanee on smallish dry flies in the evening after the sun has gone down. The usual offerings trolled also appear to be duping the trout into thinking it is something good to eat and ending them up in the cooler. Flatfish, Wedding Bands in all their incarnations and the classic Dick Nite behind a troll.

With the warmer weather the last two weeks , early and late is the time to really concentrate your efforts for trout on the lower elevation lakes. The fish will be moving up on the shoals to feast on dragon fly nymphs, leeches and scuds. During the day a fast sinking line will get you down to the fishes level. Try retrieving a dragon nymph up a drop off.

The higher elevation lakes are still fishing well into the afternoon at this time. The hatches are still coming off sporadically the higher you go and the fish are responding. Caddis dries cast out and hand twisted back are a personal favourite. Don’t forget to use floatant before you use the fly to keep it riding high longer.

Salmon opportunities just over the hills are very good right now with reports of Springs to over 30lbs coming back from folks who have made the journey or have friends fishing the Fraser in region two. Hopefully it will be our turn soon. Roe, single eggs and krill are all good baits to drift under a float for tasty Jack Springs.

The Thompson is really coming on now as well. We had a group send a report back that they had excellent success drifting from the outlet of Kamloops lake to Ashcroft. Grasshopperss, California Blondes and Stimulator type flies were the ticket. Juicy looking stonefly nymphs rolled along the bottom in likely runs also produced well. Kaufmann Stones were the preferred bug on this trip.

The Sturgeon fishing continues to be good as well. Roe is the preferred bait for these living dinosaurs. Don’t rule out a few Dew worms lashed to a hook with Magic Thread or Spider thread either.

There are still lots of opportunities for excellent fishing. Get out and enjoy this perfect weather. Take a friend who hasn’t been fishing for awhile and re-introduce them to the fun of fishing.
