hi kevin good luck getting help, man its hard!,im from scotland and ive joined on a few canadian forums trying to get info for me and my dad who are heading over to chilliwack in sep for a fishing trip and it,ll be our first time in Canada, had over 600 views of my threads and only four or five people have replied, anyway there,s another forum called BC Fishing Reports that ive found to be quite good and reading some of the posts are great for gathering information, just incase you dont know about that site.Stick with the flyfishing as its a bit hard at first but once you start to cast decent you,ll really start to catch alot more fish, best piece of advice is to always aks people what flies they are catching on and you,ll find your strike rate improves dramatically, wishing you many happy times fishing from Glasgow ,Scotland

Why dont you guys hire a charter? for the area. If you stop by one of the local fishing stores they would be more than happy to show you how to fish the area, what to use.. everything you need to know. Some sujestions are Berrys bait and tackle,Freds custom tackle,Michael and Young,Riverside fly and tackle.. are just some names there are many stores.

    Hope that helps

I'm a few years ahead of you on this process, so I'll give you some things that you might consider.

Most people are not altruistic enough to sacrifice a lot of valuable free time to help a complete stranger. That's why guides can make a living.

Nobody knows if they would even like you. You may be a great guy, but you could also be a jerk with a bad attitude (no accusation intended). You have no history with anyone here.

In any community, it helps to build relationships, put in some effort and show a genuine passion. And don't expect it to happen overnight. Friendships in general take time.

You may wish to get involved in one of the occasional group activities that are organized through this site. Let people put a face to you I've met some great guys that way. Do some research at some stores. Offer to pay for gas. Give back.

    Anyway, good luck.

I've found that if you just head out fishing somewhere chances are, if you're in the right area, you'll see another person fly fishing. I have found (although this seems to be changing) if you approach this person and ask how they are doing, if they've caught anything, what they are using generally they will be kind enough to help you out. I used to gear fish and this sort of advice between complete strangers wasn't too common (unless a guy was bragging about some glory story where he caught 40 fish in a day with some magic lure or bait). For whatever reason it seems the people who fly fish share some unseen bond before they've met. I've talked to several fly fishers i've met on rivers and ended up swapping flys, information on other places to fish, even talked about gear we've used. Chances are if you head out again you might run into these people and that can lead to lasting friendships. But as I said before, this comradely amongst fly fishers is slowly starting to vanish. Especially when it comes to fishing lakes. Its not completely gone but its nothing compared to what I've experienced on rivers. Trick is to pick a spot to try and go. If you live in north van I would check out the capilano river, the first run of coho is firing up now and i've doing well there. Its a hard river to fly fish as there is no back cast room. I would head to the cable pool by the hatchery and watch how people fly fish there. You might learn a thing or two about roll casting and fly selection for early coho.

Some very good information in this above post. If you want people to help you in your quest you have to make them aware of your existence and you must communicate effectively. You have a good start by becoming involved with this forum. If you go fishing a lot where there are other fishers, you will most likely learn a lot. But you must be resectful to others if you wish them to impart any of their knowlege, Treat other people the way you would like them to treat you; and remember, first impressions are important and they are formed in 7 seconds. Happy fishing and good luck.

Well said Zane, your best bet is too just head out on your local lake or stream, and just talk to other fly fishermen, there seems to be an unsaid comradery between fly fishermen, thats how I learned most evrything I know about my lake and fly fishing in general. And for the most part everyones real nice about it, and usually you'll get a few non-typical patterns you've never heard of before, I have over 10 patterns in my box that I've tied up because someone gave me a fly that I found to work great. Giver' a try and I'm sure you'll get some good advise,

    Hey, Kevin

Sorry, I don't live on the mainland or I would be happy to get together with you once or twice. Learning this game takes time, and I agree, start participating in this forum will help you a lot; people have been very gracious when I have posted questions. That said, there is a TON of information at your finger tips on the web about fly fishing. As to where to go, talk to your local tackle shop, to start with... Good Luck and have Fun!
