Thread: Line grain

    Default Line grain

I am planning on switching from a Windcutter to a Skagit line for my 12' 6" spey rod. The Rio guide recommends a 525 grain line. My preferred vendor only carries 500 or 550 grain. Is it better to go up or down from the recommended grain?

I personally choose to go under than over and the reason for that is I would prefer to cast a light line than heavier one, less work. Rio has cheaters that will increase the grains weight of your line in lengths of, 2.5 foot up to 7.5 so you can make it how you like it! I agree with Rick as I too prefer a lighter line. If your rod has a faster action, you may be better off to go with the heavier line but mostly it will be whatever suits you casting style.

Thanks Gentlemen. Sounds like slightly lighter is the way to go.
