    Default 12 foot boat build

Hey, just thought I'd start a thread on my boat build. I already have a 7 foot row boat, pontoon boat, and a float tube but these are all one person crafts. Since my oldest two kids are taking a bit of an interest in fishing I thought about getting a larger boat. So now I'm buliding one. I found a set of plans for a 12 foot jon boat. Should be a decent fishing craft, flat bottom and a 47 inch beam at the floor.
So hoping to have a few pics up in a couple of days. There probably won't be tons since I always forget to take them but I will try to remember to get the highlights at least.
Anyone got any tips or things they would recommend from any builds they've done. Or even anything they don't like about a boat they've built or bought and would change if they were doing it over again.

Got a good jump on it this morning, until the weather turned. (gotta get that shop bulit this summer) Pretty much got the hull complete. Looks good kind of excited to get it done and catch some fish in it.www.svensons.com/boat/?=Utility/JonBoat
Thats the link to the plans. Old plans seem fairly detailed just not great quality images, look like a photograph of an old magazine page. But it seems to be going good, hope the weather is better tommorrow

here's a couple of pics of the hull of the new boat. Just have to sand the edges nice and flip it over and start adding the seats and the rest of the inside.

Keep the reports coming, looks good.
How about a little on the size and type
of woods and finish you are using?

Got a bit more done tonight. Got the seat risers in, and the gunnels on. Had it sitting right side up, looks good geting excited. Should have a few more pictures up tommorow although I'm not much of a photographer. As far as construction and materials, I'm using 1/4 inch ply and various lumber ripped to the appropriate angles. I did just make the transom out of a solid piece of 3/4 plywood instead of the 1/4 and frame construction on the plans. It was just easier to use the 3/4 and I allready had it around. I also think it will be stronger. My plan is to cover the extierior of the hull with cloth and epoxy. A guy I work with builds cedar strip kayaks and does them this way. He says it wears well and dosen't add alot of weight the way he does it. On the inside I'm going to paint it grey maybe with some black and white splatter or speckling. I'm also goiing to paint the exterior after it gets epoxied, although I haven't picked a color for the outside yet.
Any suggestions for a hull color?
I also plan on doing scotty mounts for rod holders and anchor pullers. Maybe even the scotty oar lock system as well. I also have an electric already and a portable fish finder.

Sorry no pics tonight. But I gort alot done. Got all the seats built and all the edges trimmed and cleaned up today. Just a little trim piece on the stern and one on the bow then fill all the staple and screw holes.

Was thinking some more about the anchor mounts. Going to go with scottys. On the bow I was thinking of putting the mount on the outside of the bow right in the center. That way the mount isn't in the back of anyone riding in the front. Anyone see a problem with doing that? I also don't want it to stick up above the gunnel either so it doesn't hang up when loading and unloading from the rack on my truck.

Hoping to be catching fish out of it by June.
