Salmon?

First off, I know nothing about salmon. I was fishing one of the beaches in west Vancouver today and saw a couple of (what I think were) salmon that jumped clear out of the water at least a couple of feet. Does anybody have any idea what these would be this time of year? They were probably 18 to 20 inches in length and appeared to be very bright silver and were not even 100 feet off shore.
