OK now you are getting over my head. I have no idea what kind of bugs but there were two prevalant types. The largest number we really tiny and were mostly sitting on the water surface. They looked like those clouds of bugs you walk through when hiking. The other type were much larger and IN YOUR FACE, maybe the size of a may fly, very similar actually.
The fish were certainly attracted as they were jumping all over the place so I would think that a dry fly might be effective?
Is there a website that might have pictures or can you go by my description?
Just so you know, that was the first time my fly rod got wet and probably my 5th time fishing, ever. I can say, though, I am hooked. I didn't even come close to catching anything but I sure had fun getting out and actually casting on water and learning where I need to improve.
Looking forward to sunday. Do you know where prospect lake is? In google maps search for lakeside park and that is where we will be launching from.
Hot Diggity Dog
It sounds like a midge hatch was going off. It's a little early for Mayflies, but since we've had pretty good weather and they are quite a bit bigger than midges, they could be the larger "in your face" bugs. I'm not great at entomology so I very well could be waaaay off track, but that's my guess. I'll bring some drys and tie up some more chronies. I'd like to hear what other people think.
I know where the lake is so I'll meet you at the park no later than 1pm
Fly fishing is not only a method to catch fish, but a state of mind.
I just got back from my invertebrate sampling - too late for your fishing trip though. There was a HUGE midge hatch at the lake I'm studying in Metchosin, with lots of mayfly larvae still swimming around. We are also starting to find some caddis cases empty now, but I have'nt spotted them as adults yet.....
Wish I could be there to meet up, but I've already had a lolng day on the water, and it's only 1:00......maybe next time.....
Catch and Release -- into my frying pan!
