Hey folks.
I'm looking a picking up a 10-11wt reel for a Spey rod (steelhead) and occasional saltwater use (tarpon, etc).
I'd like to get the best balance of price to performance, without sacrificing too much in either.
On reel that I've been looking at is the Lamson Guru. It recieved a best new product award from Field and Stream (which may or may not mean much).
It is a fully machined aluminum reel with a sealed canonical drag - shared with their higher end Lightspeed reel. I played with it a bit at Berry's and it seemed quite smooth to my relatively inexperienced eye. From what I understand, the main difference between the two is that the Lightspeed has a harder anodization, making it less susceptible to scratches.
The price point of the Guru is $250, as opposed to $399 for the Lightspeed.
I'd appreciate any thoughts on this reel and/or input on alternatives. Is this a good price point for me to be looking in? Would it make a significant difference if I opened my wallet a little wider? Note that I'm no pro, so my skills are likely to continue to be my greatest limitation for a long time to come.
Thanks.
I looked at them for a 6 weight over the weekend and was impressed with what I saw. I was outfitting myself with a new 6 weight rod and reel in addition to a new pair of waders, etc. so the price was a little too steep for me with all my other purchases. I bought myself a Redington Rise for about $40 less and am pretty happy with my decision. I have to admit that i really liked the Guru though. Maybe I'll pick one up when finances are a bit better.
