Just inside the upper hook as part of the white hackle, and not much. As for the Humpy, perhaps under the deer hair body? You cannot compress it much for fear of losing floatation.
Don't give up on the idea unless you have tried the ties you did, sine some people tie those exact ones in large sizes. I never have tried to do dries on tubes however, so these are just ideas to think about.
Some things to try are larger cicada fies using black and / or brown foam and a tiny bit of flash under the wing, more tube based foam hoppers as those are going to work fine and should float like corks; use of horizontal hackle and lightweight rubber or even foam legs to prevent the fly from breaking through the miniscus, wrapping the body from thin sheet packing foam, and so on, keeping all factors related to why the fly is going to be most likely to be eaten by fish.
I think one fly that could work might be the 'Cutthroat Candy' which is basically a wulff coachman with white rubber legs (or it looks to be) and can be found (not as a tube) on the Sport Fishing on the Fly web site. I doubt however if in rivers like the elk that it HAS to be floating for that to work...
There are many wake and skater type flies for salmon and steelhead that can be and may be tied using tubes and I think they are larger ones that should not be an issue at all.
salaR: i jsut downloaded mazilla firefox and the pictures work fine now.
tyler: nice patterns bro, i love that bloody bugger man. thats a sick fly with great prospects in our home town.
to whom this may concern: i understand about the foul hooking technique but even this last year i had many hits on my indicator on a certain rainbow honey hole. that just reminded me of those times is all
