Leeches are a favorite food item of hungry, prowling trout. Note that On Maple Lake outside Courtenay, the #1 most productive lure was a #5 Red Fl. Flatfish retreived very slow. That is a leech imitation and I could cast it far out over and over again off the shore when casting a fly was impossible.
So dark coloured leech flies ( tied to work right ) fished deep will guarantee success.
my next idea, - fishing big leaches of all colours for coho in the river mouths...
I agree with all the leech fans. I also believe in using large leech patterns. I use a 2-4 streamer hook, but my design is a mix of things
I use a marabou tail with added flash, but the the body is made from a specialty black yarn from Zellers Knitting selection. It is a barnette yarn,
that has runner coming out of the main thread that are about 3-4cm long, mix with purple flash intertwined with it. I like very fat bodied leech flies. It cause the fly on a retrieve to puff up like a leech moves through the water. Others to use in the fall are scuds, shrimp, and I like spratlies.
Retrieve - which local lakes are you going to be fishing. Personally i fish Chironies most of the time locally because those fraser valley trout are lazy and cant resist a meal sitting still LOL I have one pattern that will catch fish everytime out on a couple of the lakes, sometimes it may only catch a few and something else catches more of course but it will always get a few tugs. With that being said i do fish other stuff as well, Leeches being another favourite (small ones) but i also use halfbacks, damsels, 52Buicks and a couple other things i cant recall.
