I imagine that you can get some sweet wind knots with a counter balanced pattern...

Thanks John, and TP, I have used perhaps a similar leech pattern for a long time and found it very good. One thing I have done however has been to have a collection of both colors and sizes for each pattern when fishing lakes I have not been to. Naturally the same goes for the alpaca leeches JohnK tied for me.

I'm just getting in to fly fishing as well and fished a lot in October around here. I did well with a small muddler minnow, OK with a couple different 'spratleys but by far had the most success with a pure black full bodied leach ~3" when in the water - and tended to stick with that.

This was for mainly cut throat as that's the predominant species in the lakes here but I did catch rainbows as well. Most success was trolling or fast retrieving with fast sinking line. And I did catch one fish still fishing. I was fumbling in my vest for something with little line out and bam. So interesting to hear that you fish'm with indicators there johnk, I might look in to this some more. ..

Freshwater shrimp and leeches are my go to flys for fall days on the water.

My fly of choice in the fall is the old standby leech. Black with some sparkle is my favorite or a "Little Fort".

depends on the fish your fishing. cut throats are very aggresive and will take large prey like stickleback, sculpin and leaches. those are all my favorite patterns. the mcleods stickleback, olive sculpins, and olive-purple-black-marron leeches are all sick. the lake is the biggest variable.

Depends where youre fishing I guess. I'd have to agree with maverick, up here in our parts of the woods sculpins sticklebacks and big leaches seem to be the ticket. For me they seem to be the go to flies in some of our lakes any time of the year. Bust especially in the fall.

Ahh Late fall. My favourite time of year. When fishing trout at this time of year, I like to use the ruby eye, blood leech, olive leech. hell, i use em all. I cast them under the indicator, and let it sit there. Man, thats a blast!
Fly fishing has ruined my life
