Default Selling goods ..has it got out of hand?

I'm into a lot of forums ..the fishing ones have 'classified' section for the members for the purpose of buying and selling goods...this is all good, we all are looking for bargains no doubt...But..I believe ppl have forgotten how to evaluate what they can get for their ware...

...example:..a rod which sells for say $300.00 in a retail store..now this rod is not produced any longer but the owner figures he should get $200-$250 for it even though he says he used it only a few times..also brand new no marks on it..

..NOW here is what I know..that rod or any rod that sold for $300.00 in a store is only worth outside to be $100.00...the street price for any and all things is 1/3 the cost of the item...not the prices that are being seen throught the fishing classifieds today...

..sure ppl haggle with the asking price but honestly wouldn't it be so much better to sell at the street price and get rid of the products instead of being so bloody greedy?................................Wolfie

I think some people only put stuff up to see how much they would get for it.
Their thinking "I dont really want to get rid of it, but lets see If I could sell it for about the same I bought it for, so i could basically get a new one for free."
Something along those lines. I like trading. Personally, Its done very well for me. Both people are happy, and not out of money. These days, thats important.

    Good topic Wolf.

You are correct, and pawn shops generally give 25 cents on the dollar.

So my bottom line is if I need something and budget permits the little shop will get my business.
    Which also helps with warranty.

Used is second or first if cash flow is tight, but deals are few and far between.

Box stores are for our diapers and toilet paper and maybe batteries for kids toys.

I'm all for helping out the ppl in the forums I belong to..however..what I've seen as far as prices that are being asked for some items is rather off the wall..if ppl would only think a minute that if they bought a brand new car..it depreciates the minute it leaves the lot, therefore ANYTHING they try and sell does the same thing..I'm also surprised that ppl have NOT voiced their opinion in this thread..except for 2 members...........HMM...did I hit a nerve by posting this thread?...

As far as buying something for the sake of a warranty, that is also absurd..most ppl forget to turn them in and besides, if the product gave a life time warranty, who cares who bought it or not the manufacture will always stand by the policy .....................Wolfie

I'm with ya AW. However I think this topic was brought up last year and that's why a lot of people are staying out of it.

If a new rod costs $250, I'm not paying $200 for it, even it's been used just once! I'd consider it for $175'ish and probably be inclined to purchase it around $150-$160.

Clothing is an entirely different matter! I saw a "gently used" pair of Simms G4 waders and the asking price was $40 less than the purchase price. People need to get a grip on their pricing and come back to reality.
Fly fishing is not only a method to catch fish, but a state of mind.

The market will reflect supply, demand and psychology. I have no problem with the pricing here, but that's also because I usually dont take the price at face value. Everything is open to a little haggling and that usually brings the price back down the earth, but still keeps both parties happy.

I'm not sure why there would be a complaint about these issues - it's between the buyer and the seller and really not any of our business if someone wants to basically give away their gear to get a quick cash grab or whether someone wants to passively try to sell something they still kinda want so they try to charge a premium for what used to be their favourite rod till they just got a new one, but still dont want to retire the old one completely.

I'd be a little more concerned with the retail prices since they get stupid quickly, especially in Canada...

Tell ya what Wolfy, list up anything that you want to sell for 33 cents on the dollar. I'm interested!

Seriously, I think your way low on that figure. I bought and sold quite a few used rifles through forums and have bought used fishing gear as well. IMO a used rifle with no more than a few minor blemishes on it is worth more like 75% of retail before taxes. Or, at least, they will usually sell at that kind of price.

I think fishing gear is about the same. Higher end quality gear will hold most of its value if its in very good condition. Or at least, again, it will sell for that. Its what the market will bear. Plain and simple.

I bought a used fly rod package off of a member here recently. I figure new retail would have been a little over 3 bills before taxes. I paid 220, and I do not regret the purchase.

I also do not agree with 33 cents on the dollar but you have to remember, Salty, that once a rod changes hands the lifetime warranty is null and void which greatly reduces the value of a rod in my eyes.

Very true jonk. But for whatever reason I've still seen $500 Sages (new retail) sell for $350. ..

Now thats my kind of deal! lol. Its like barganing in Mexico. I love it! Being new to the sport of fly fishing, I have yet to get into any used gear but would consider it if the item was in good condition. I'm also the type of person that is willing to pay extra for the peaceful sleep I get with a lifetime waruantee.
