    Default Start Spey Rod

    Hey guys,

I have an opportunity to purchase a 13'3" 7wt spey for a great price BUT, I have not ventured down the Spey path yet so I'm clueless. I don't want to miss an opp to get a new rod for cheap. But I'm not a big, get it and if I don't like it sell it, person. So my question is would this be a good starter rod, or should I just wait and take my time?

    Thanks for the opinions folks.

You'll have to list the make and model to be sure to get the best advice. Size and Wt doesnt always matter. Also, what sort of fish do you plan to catch and on what sort of water?

I just played this game recently and it's a steep curve to learn.

Lots of people to ask questions of here. Good luck.

    Hey btree,

I read some of your threads on spey and I see that it was alot of study to get things going. I guess I'm just trying to justify getting a great deal even though I'm not ready for it. I do know that I want to be throwing one in the new year.

Redington RS3 - fishing the vedder

BTW, with your help I decided against the shooting tip line from a few weeks back. Thanks for your insight into that.

this doesnt happen to be the rod that Rick Passek is selling is it ??

    Redington RS3 13' 3" 7wt (4pc)

that should be a great Skagit rod for any river you want to fish. that rod will also toss a great mid belly line if you choose to go that way instead.

I learned to spey cast with a mid belly line and just bought a skagit to learn this season because of its fishing versatility. and with a shorter belly you can fish tighter quarters easier.

This will be a great rod for all species except - being that its a 7wt you "might" not want to go targetting big springs or the super fresh Squamish chums. I mean you can handle those fish with that rod however you will most likely tire them out alot more then you would like.

If you are buying a rod from Rick make sure you ask him lots of questions when you pick it up about lines and stuff to use with it....Because if he has fished it much then he may know what will work well on it.

    Hey J,

Thanks for the feedback and yes that would be Rick P's rod that he's selling. I'm a bit undecided as I want to upgrade my 8wt. It's just such a great deal.

Sorry Rick, I did some more digging and found lots. It would seem that the 14's are preferred as a starter stick. Need to study up on spey

No, I've been too busy to think about it. I guess I should decide soon tho! Thanks for your offer, I would certainly take you up on it.

I would much appreciate too if I could get a copy of that dvd.
I can cast using "circle C" and then shoot from the right side (assuming that river is running right to left). what I need to see and learn believe you me is Single spey. for some reason I can not throw my line far enough doing that.
with your dvd maybe I can detect the problems.
    thank you for whatever answer.
