    Thumbs up Spider Lake

My son and I drove to Illusion Lake this afternoon. The lake is presently about a fifth as big as it was the last time I saw it. The dry summer has really taken a toll on it.

So we went to Spider Lake and were on the water a little after 4 p.m. Fishing was very good. I hooked nine fish in three hours and landed 5 trout to 14 inches and one bass about three pounds. My little guy never got a touch even when I swapped rods with him.

A size 6 Caverhill Nymph worked for four of the trout and the bass. The biggest trout came to a brown leech tied with a rootbeer bead head, brown marabou wing, dubbed and picked out natural rabbit fur body, a couple of pieces of brown rubber hackle sticking out in the front half and a short tail to match the wing. It was the best three hours I spent on Spider Lake and might be worth a look for you.

I've never fished Illusion but I've done Spider a few times and I've always had a good day on that lake. Be careful of the eagles who have a tendancy to do high-speed flypasts on your hooked fish.

My 2 favourite flies on Spider are a red Spratley and a brown'ish lamahair leech.
Fly fishing is not only a method to catch fish, but a state of mind.

I used to fish Illusion quite a bit when I was younger for pumpkinseeds, and was thinking about taking my son out there to get him started on them. Great little lake for kids.
