Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0646-Recreational - Salmon: Nitinat River Recreational Salmon Fishing Opportunities

The Nitinat River will open to recreational angling for chinook salmon from
Tuesday August 25 until Wednesday, September 30, 2009. The fishery will then
close from October 01 until October 14 reopening on October 15 for coho and
chum salmon only. This 2 week closure will provide protection to chinook
salmon during the peak spawning period.

Effective August 25 to September 30, 2009 the daily limit for the non-tidal
portion of the Nitinat River is two (2) chinook salmon of which only one maybe
greater than 77 cm in length and,

effective October 15 until December 31, 2009 the daily limit for the non-tidal
portion of the Nitinat River is two (2) coho salmon, either hatchery marked or
unmarked and two chum salmon.

The following portions of the Nitinat River are closed to all fishing:
- Upstream of Nitinat River / Parker Creek confluence (all year);
- Within 100 meter radius of the Nitinat River hatchery water intake and
fishway (all year);
- Between fishing boundary signs located approximately 100 meters above and
below Red Rock Pool (from August 25 until December 31, 2009);
- Between fishing boundary signs upstream and downstream of the entrance to the
Glory Hole Slough (from August 25 until December 31, 2009);
- From 50 meters upstream to 50 meters downstream of the Nitinat River Bridge
from August 25 until December 31, 2009).


Anglers shall also note:
- the above restrictions are in addition to any other closed area already in
place by regulation,
- the use of single barbless hooks is mandatory in all streams within Region 1,
- all fish foul hooked (i.e. hooked other than in the mouth) must be returned
to the river immediately,
- any chinook salmon retained measuring in excess of 50 cm must be recorded on
the reverse side of your Non-Tidal Angling Licence.
