Default Kamloops area - Early September

    Hello,

I am planning a fishing trip for September 4th to September 8th.

I would like to try a lake in the Kamloops area, but was wondering if anyone experienced with the region could predict what the conditions will be like at that time of year.

I fished Knouff Lake from August 3rd to August 5th and it was completely dead. I tried everything from chronies, shrimp, leeches, dragon fly nymphs and even an elk hair caddis fly for a bit, even though we only saw two fish jump the entire time. Not even a strike, despite a total of about 20 hours of fishing. We did not see or hear of anyone catching anything at all, on the fly or gang trolls. In previous years, I fished this lake with great success in mid to late July. I was quite surprised by the change.

After Knouff Lake, I moved onto Helena (south Cariboo) which is similar elevation and the shoals were full of air bound rainbows, flying around after the sedges, yet the lake was even warmer than Knouff (74F vs 71F). It was one of my best fishing experiences ever, but it left me rather confused.

I would like to try Kamloops area again (perhaps Tunkwa or Knouff) because it is closer to Vancouver. I will be going Sept 4-8th, but was wondering if the fishing will have improved by then, with the cooler temperatures but without the fall turnover. Can any experts weigh in on this? I want to get at least a little bit of tight line action for this trip.

    Thanks!

I would imagine that Tunkwa/Leighton might have slower fishing at that time because right now its gang busters up there with the big bombers hatching. Ths fish will be pretty filled up by September but there is always fish to be had in those lakes

you could try dairy lake or duffy, high elevation lakes cool down quicker in the evening or morning fish.

I know it's a late post, but maybe you'll read this before your next trip to the Kamloops area. Red Lake should be producing very nice Rainbows and Brookies this October, if not already. Might be something to check out... I know I'm planning on fishing it in a week or two here.
