I think the reel scientific suggestion would be: a bit of both, as in 1 dark color mixed with 1 light color? get my drift?

which colour show up the best in dirty river conditions? there seems to be some who say dark colours and some say bright colour but there must be some scientific answer to this.

The red end of the spectrum consists of long light waves, the blue end of shorter waves. Dirt, haze and other particulates in air interfere more with short waves (blue) than they do long (red) waves. The same should hold true in dirty water. Reds should be more visible than blues in dirty water.
