    Default Powderkeg Fishing Report

    The Powderkeg Fishing Report

Well it looks like we have settled into the early summer patterns for the lakes.
There is so much going on right now the fish can pick and choose.
Depending on the time of day and location on the lake our quarry could be keyed in on any one of several food sources.

Chironamids work every day there is no ice. Don’t leave home without them! Right now small # 16’s and large “Bombers” in the #10 and #8 sizes seem to be the ticket.

Damsels are still making their presence known. A good customer from Seattle had success fishing damsels at Logan lake on Monday.
Shrimps and scuds are also high on the menu right now. Try a pregnant shrimp, there seems to be a spawn going on right now and the rainbows will key on them at times.

The world famous, but elusive, Traveler Sedge is living up to its reputation right now, with emergences being spotty at this time. Keep your fingers crossed and have dry as well as pupae patterns ready to go. California Blondes, Tom thumbs and the like are good choices to carry with you.

I wouldn’t head to my favourite lake without dragons right now. The big mouthfuls for the trout are migrating and the fish love them. Tie on a Butler Bug or Gomphus pattern and hold on!

Be prepared to try a variety of techniques and patterns to ensure success.
At this time there doesn’t appear to be a “ Hot “ lake or lakes. The fishing has been fair to good just about everywhere.

I would suggest just getting out and having fun with a few friends and family. A couple of fish would be a great bonus. It’s all about making memories for me. “ Remember the time…….. “

    Default Memories

Words of wisdom, Fred. Well done.

About ten years ago we took our two sons to Chataway and were fishing Gypsum on an early July day and the larger fish were stacked up in the blowdowns along the west shore. There were travellers everywhere and the fish were taking, what I thought was, pupa subsurface. The problem was my son couldn't hook any fish on my pupa patterns so I took an olive grey Mikaluk and cut the wings down to stubs and that was the answer. This was the first time he had caught multiple 20"+ trout and he literally " peed himself" and swears to this day that those damn waders were leaking.
To make a long story short we took two fish for dinner and found out later while cleaning them that they were stuffed with damsel nymphs, an emergence that escaped our observations but that day lives on in the memory banks and will continue to do so for years. So much so that that lake is very special to our family and we return there as often as we can.

    Thanks for the nod John.
Lundbom has been fishing pretty good for yesterday and today.
I will see if I can find the killer pattern.

really nice fish was lost right next to the boat, the only one we "wrestled" in was a fresh little 7 inch bow
